Aircraft, Tanks and Emergency Vehicles

Vehicles to fill out a scene: military helicopters and police helicopters, planes and military planes, tanks, police cars and fire trucks. There are destruction clips too, including plane crashes, several coming straight at the camera.

Category information

ProRes or MP4?

ProRes (.MOV): the alpha channel keeps the semi-transparent blur of spinning rotors and propellers intact against open sky.
MP4: comes with a background to take out. Key it if it's green. Rotor tips and antennas are where a rough key fails first, so inspect them frame by frame.

How to composite vehicles into a shot

Match the camera height. A helicopter filmed from the ground won't sit in a plate shot from a rooftop, however well it's keyed.
Ground the tires: paint a soft, dark shadow where they meet the road, offset in the direction your plate's shadows fall.
Where bright sky meets a fuselage or rotor edge, soften the join with Light Wrap, a free After Effects plugin.
For angles the clips don't cover, build the shot from 3D vehicle models instead.
