Liquids/Ice

Liquid, Slime and Ice Effects

Water in many forms: rain and drifting mist, splashes, oceans and waterfalls, underwater bubbles and particulate for submerged shots, bullet trails, ice, plus colored slime, clear slime and liquid ink.

Category information

Which format for which liquid?

ProRes (.MOV): the alpha keeps clear slime, splashes and ice partly see-through, and gives colored slime and ink a clean edge. The safer choice for anything solid in color.
MP4: rain and mist on black drop in with Screen or Add; in DaVinci Resolve, that's Inspector → Composite Mode. A green background calls for a chroma key.

How to use water and liquid effects

For an underwater look, tint the shot blue-green, then layer particulate behind and in front of your subject, with the front layer slightly blurred.
Time each splash to the contact frame, a foot in a puddle or a prop hitting water, and mask its base behind the surface.
Wet the scene to match the rain: darken the ground and give it a slight sheen. Rain falling on dry pavement never looks right.
Pair heavy rain with lightning for storm scenes.
