Blood

Blood Hits, Splatter and Wounds

Blood elements for horror, thrillers, fight scenes and game trailers: blood bursts for hits, wall gore for splatter left on a surface, and wounds and healing effects for injuries and on-screen recovery. Many are mini bursts, sized for a single hit.

Category information

ProRes or MP4 for blood?

ProRes (.MOV): its alpha channel keeps the fine spray around each burst semi-transparent. Use it whenever the effect crosses an actor or a light wall.
MP4: has a background to remove. On green, pull a chroma key and add spill suppression so no green tint creeps into the red edges.

How to add blood hits to a scene

Run your editor's tracker on the impact point, so the burst moves with the actor instead of hanging in the air.
Trigger each burst as the hit lands, and keep it brief. A few frames of spray sells a hit; a long one draws attention.
For wall splatter, corner-pin the element to the wall's perspective, then freeze its last frame so the mark stays put after the spray ends.
Keep continuity: once a wound appears, it stays in every later angle. For stills and thumbnails, use blood splatter graphics.
