Explosions

Explosion VFX for Film and Video

Explosion elements for action scenes, from ground explosions and aerial blasts to dust and debris bursts, missiles and nuclear detonations. Most are pre-keyed, so you can drop them over your footage without rotoscoping.

Category information

Which format should I download?

ProRes (.MOV): has an alpha channel and the highest quality. The one to use for dust and debris explosions, with their dark smoke, and for anything you plan to grade heavily.
MP4: a fraction of the file size. Fireballs on black blend with Screen or Add; on green, key it out.
PNG sequence: individual frames, handy for Nuke and 3D compositing.

Category help

How to composite an explosion

Line up the base of the blast with the ground or impact point, and scale it to its distance from camera.
Add a burst of dust or dirt where the blast meets the ground, so it disturbs the scene instead of floating over it.
Shake the camera on the first frames, with Camera Shake or a few position keyframes.
Let smoke plumes linger after the blast, and sync explosion sound effects to the first flash.
