Muzzle Flashes

Muzzle Flashes, Gunfire Smoke and Casings

Flashes for shootouts and action scenes: single shot and handgun flashes, multi-point and automatic fire, bullet cases and gunfire smoke puffs. Gunfire smoke clips are named by angle (20, 90, 160 degrees and more), so you can match the way the barrel points.

Category information

Which format for flashes, smoke and casings?

ProRes (.MOV): its alpha suits smoke puffs and casings, which are solid or gray, and keeps flashes bright over daylight footage.
MP4: a flash on black only needs Screen or Add; in Premiere Pro that's Effect Controls → Opacity → Blend Mode. Green backgrounds need a chroma key.
PNG sequence: single frames, so you can pick the brightest flash frame and place it exactly.

How to add muzzle flashes

Set the flash at the barrel tip and rotate it to the gun's angle. For automatic fire, re-place it on every shot as the weapon moves.
Light the shooter: on each flash frame, lift the exposure on their face, hands and the wall beside them with a warm, soft mask.
Cutting at 24 fps with a 30 fps clip? The conversion can drop a one-frame flash. Conform the clip in After Effects' Interpret Footage so every frame plays.
Leave a smoke puff hanging after the shot, and sync gunfire sound effects to the flash frame.
