Choosing a format for HUDs and ships

ProRes (.MOV): the alpha is what you want for spaceships, which are solid, and for scope overlays, which sit over the whole frame in Normal mode. It also keeps thin HUD lines and small text crisp over bright footage.
MP4: HUDs and holograms emit light, so on black, switch the layer to Add or Screen. Key it when it's on green.

How to composite sci-fi HUDs and holograms

Pick one interface color and tint every HUD element to it, so the screens read as a single system.
Make holograms imperfect: lower the opacity, add a light flicker and let the background show through. For your own footage, the Hologram plugin is a one-click alternative.
Push distant spaceships back with haze and lower contrast, and add motion blur to fast passes.
Finish with sci-fi sound effects: charge-ups, glitches and tonal hums.
