Weather and Natural Disaster Effects

Change the weather or bring on a disaster: rain and lightning for storms, storm clouds and tornadoes for dramatic skies, plus meteors, ocean waves, sandstorms, avalanches and earthquakes for disaster scenes and dramatic establishing shots.

Category information

Which format should I download?

ProRes (.MOV): alpha channel. The one to use for dense elements like clouds, tornadoes, sandstorms and avalanches.
MP4: lighter downloads. Lightning and rain on black work with Screen; anything on green needs a key.

How to add weather to a shot

Match speed to distance: far-off tornadoes and clouds move slowly, while rain and debris close to camera move fast.
Build rain in layers, with fine, slow rain in the distance and heavier streaks close to camera.
Mask tornadoes and clouds behind the horizon, buildings and trees so they sit in the scene.
For earthquakes and avalanches, shake the camera too, with Camera Shake or a few keyframes.
Add wind and storm audio from our natural sound effects.
