Dust + Smoke

Smoke and Dust Effects

Dark smoke plumes rising from fires and wreckage, debris bursts of dust kicked up by impacts, and shockwaves that roll out from a blast. Use them for the aftermath of an explosion or to fill a ruined set with atmosphere.

Which format should I download?

ProRes (.MOV): alpha channel, which keeps thin, semi-transparent wisps exactly as rendered. The one to use for smoke.
MP4: comes on a green background. Key it out, then check the thin edges of the smoke, where keys tend to eat detail.

How to use smoke VFX

Slow large, distant plumes down slightly. Big columns of smoke move more slowly than small puffs, and the slower speed sells the scale.
Layer two or three plumes at different sizes. Make distant ones smaller, softer and lighter so the scene has depth.
Grade the smoke so its darkest parts match the shadows in your footage.
Let a thin layer drift across the foreground now and then; it adds depth and hides the edges of the composite.
Pair it with fire for burning buildings, or debris for impacts.
